AEGIR 12,5 YEARS: TIME TO PARTY...

In June we celebrated our 12,5 anniversary. Another milestone. Personnel and agents were treated to an afternoon party, including a bbq, inspirational talk, agents of the year-award and our house band.
As always it was very well organized. Organizing a party is definitely something AEGIR does very well too.

blade carriers by AMPS

Most people wouldn't describe these blade carriers as being good looking. We however do! Mostly, because we've produced them ourselves in anticipation of a complete cpp-overhaul. We used reversed engineering to obtain the required drawings.
Later this year we'll remove the worn out parts and replace them. The job will be -for the bigger part- carried out in the AMPS-workshop in Holland.

WANTED: ROWERS

roeisloepteam RAN

We zoeken dus enthousiaste teamleden.

Moet je heel groot en sterk zijn om te roeien?
Nee.
Man of vrouw maakt dat uit? Nee.
Leeftijd? Niet echt, maar er is vast een boven- en ondergrens.
Het huidige team bestaat uit mannen en vrouwen tussen de 18 en 60 jaar. Belangrijkste eigenschap is doorzettingsvermogen.
We trainen 2x per week getraind (maandag/donderdag 17.00–18.30 uur) vanuit de Wijkse haven.

These are G. da Silva Martinus and J.A. Ramos Texeira. Not Dutch guys as you might have guesed. They came all the way from Brazil to be our guests for 2 weeks. The purpose of their visit was an inhouse training at AEGIR.
The result, 2 proud new AEGIR engineers. They will be stationed in Rio de Janeiro where they are employed by our agent MPS. When working on a job for AEGIR, you can recognize them by our famous blue/yellow overalls.

Dry Propeller repair by AMPS & UPE, afloat

Day 1

After UPE inspection showed damaged and bended blades AMPS designed a repair plan that would enable the Baltic Star to continue sailing without docking.
The vessel was trimmed to bring the blades above water to allow dry cropping.

Day 2

Everything was put in place to start the work. All 4 blades were inspected once more and measurements were put on the most damaged blade as a mark for all the blades. All cropped pieces were inspected and measured once more.
The blades were rounded and smoothened with a finishing layer by polishing.
A last Dye test was performed to check the surface for cracks in the new blade edge. The result was positive.

Late afternoon the repair team disembarked. The job had been done.

Measuring AEGIR's longboat

Our longboat ambition becomes more serious by the day. Last weekend Ran's handicap was determined. Loaded upon a truck we headed for Stavoren (in the north). There she went into the water to wait for the measuring.

Ran was being hooked on to the measuring boat with a towing line and lots of measuring equipment. Provided with twelve people we were being towed and measured. A second time followed with only 10 people (just in case).
Afterwards length, height, width and weight were being measured.
All of this together defines the handicap.

We had to drive a long way, wait till dark, but for the coming 5 years our handicap is a fact.

AMPS and UPE, a good match

Not long ago UPE* approached AMPS* for a long term partnership. UPE is a young -fully certified- diving company specialized in under water repair.

AMPS is an expert on propulsion systems. We know about propellers and (bow) thrusters.

Many diving company claim they can do all under water propulsion repair. Only few actually can. The propulsion system demands great care. Cropping a damaged blade often leads to destroying the hydrodynamic design. It's a (too) short term solution.
Combining the two specialisms obviously made sense. So we soon agreed on a partnership.
As of today, if you might run into an underwater propulsion problem, we're here.

Meet Jan Swiers, our new AMPS engineer

Jan Swiers started working at AMPS' in-house repair this week.

About Jan Swiers: over a year ago he said goodbye to the working life. He was offered an early retirement.
However after a year all the house-renovating jobs had been done and Jan started to get bored. Between sailing his Waarschip, reading and walking the dog, he ran into the AMPS job-ad. Why not?, he thought.
He came, had his interview and not before long got himself a new job.

Jan is a marine engineer, worked long for Polaroid and Slender and is very happy to work in the maritime industry once more.

Propulsion Service makes sure they get dirty hands and puts them on a bow thruster-cleaning job.

The traineeship has to provide the students with insights on what kind of jobs there are and what these job  involve.

What else can we say, but: pity that the propulsion-job has been done. Working on a huge construction vessel with special specifications is a joy. And yes work is work, but sometimes it's more than that.

AMPS / UPE* had been asked to remove a bow thruster. It was supposed to be done afloat. However the bow thruster was welded into the tunnel and turned out to be impossible to remove. All repairs had to be done in situ.

The year starts with a large truck carrying two huge crates. Of course they didn't come by surprise. We knew each crate contained a bow thruster type TT2400. The bow thrusters had been removed from a cruiseship just before Christmas.

Inhouse Repair will deal with the thrusters. They will be dismantled and inspected. A full report will be made, including a repair proposal.

The next phase will be rebuilding the thrusters and making them ready for their next assignment. Spring 2013 they will be installed on a sister cruiseship during her next drydocking.

A new exhibition for AEGIR-Marine and an introduction to Ukraine and Odessa - a modern, dynamic and busy city.
Getting there wasn't easy: a 2-days-delay, forced stay in Warschau due to heavy fog and a lot of reshuffled meetings.

However the exhibition was super! Smaller than SMM, but very nice! We met many customers, talked with a Ukrainian goverment delegation and welcomed the Dutch embassy.
Their press officer interviewed us and was suprised by AEGIR's achievement in this region in such a short time.

Propeller-repair, true craftmanship

Last month we saw how this large 5-blade-propeller (5.3m) was transported from Turkey. Once in the AMPS workshop we saw the damage done from close by: 3 cropped blades and 5 bended. Not a minor repair and 3 disciplines are required: hydro-dynamics, casting specialists and propeller repair experts.

We started by hot-straightening the bended blades. We made a mold from the best blade in order to cast new tops for the cropped blades. It goes without saying that all of this work is done by certified experts and under class.
All in all it’s a beautiful piece of work in which all of AMPS’ knowledge and expertise comes together. But above all it’s pure craftmanship. Not something just anyone can do.

Good customer ratings for AEGIR

Of course we’re not perfect. Dealing with complaints is an area for improvement for AEGIR. Of course we take this very seriously and have already taken steps to improve ourselves. Rest assured that next time we’ll score well in this area too.

Great bow thruster job!

This bow thruster was transported to Wijk bij Duurstede a little while ago. Earlier we carried out an inspection on this bow thruster, because there were some unclear issues. Opening up the inspection cover we found small metal parts. That ruled out a simple repair. Especially since we ran out of dock time.

So the bow thruster was demounted and brought to AMPS in Holland for a complete overhaul.
In the meantime the ship has to sail without.

Spacer in a backpack

A job in Miami. AEGIR's service engineer saw that the AFT liner was grooved. The only solution was to place a spacer. Obviously he did't have one on him, but there was still time. AEGIR -of course- had one in stock and put immediately a courier -with a spacer in his backpack- on the plane.
Once in Miami the spacer did not fit! A little research revealed that the original used to be a MANEBAR that had been converted to MK2. They just 'forgot' to credit this in the drawings. ?Fortunately our mechanics don't give up that easily. He called a local workshop and had the spigot removed and the drilling holes drilled into slots.
The result: it fitted just perfectly. The spacer was placed and the ship left the port without downtime.

Some great orders for AEGIR-Marine

A close collaboration between our Greek agent, our Area Sales Manager and Ruud Muis led to an order for 8 vessels.
We will deliver spares (PRIME SEAL
750 AFT& FWD seals) and service for all vessels. Dockings are scheduled for
2012 & 2013.

This one comes from a Russian customer. Russia is a difficult market, so becoming a 'preffered supplier' means something! According to the customer it was due to excellent quality combined to advanced service. The work starts in April.

Another special order came for a Dutch owned vessel. We were asked for a retrofit to our PRIME SEAL secure stern seal, size 600.
We will deliver and install the seal, including a Kamewa-type liner, before the end of April.

AMPS Controls is a new development within AEGIR-Marine Propulsion Service (AMPS) and did a great job in Mexico. An AMPS engineer performed an overhaul on a CPP, he checked all wear parts, did measurements and replaced seals (afloat).

At jobs like this it's hard to leave the controls out. And so when the seals were replaced, de shaft and propeller back in place it was time for controls. Our Controls engineer flew to Mexico and did all the necessary maintenance and adjustments.
Of course all this was done within time scheduled and by now the ship sails again as before. Or better ;)

Quick service is a state of mind

Shipping seals within 24 hours

Late Tuesday evening…a dealer from Poland calls the AEGIR office.
He desperately needs seals for a vessel, docking in Las Palmas. For some reason the seals on board of the vessel are not the correct ones (not ours).

Of course ;) AEGIR has the wanted seals in stock. Early Wednesday morning the dealer receives our offer. He confirms the order and within the hour the correct seals are packed and on their way.
They arrive early Thursday morning. In time to be installed.

Nothing is impossible – a true story

Not long ago one of AEGIR’s engineers was working on board of a German vessel. The superintendent told him that the FWD seal had never been renewed. Not since new built, 12 years ago. An OEM-engineer once took a look, but turned around halfway down the stairs saying: “It’s absolutely impossible to ever replace the FWD seal. There’s no room.” That being said he left.

AEGIR’s engineer Ronald thought ‘nothing is impossible’ and had a hole sawn in the steel plate above the seal. Head down he lowered himself next to the seal. He couldn’t see a thing and had to do it all by touch.
Everything went will, till he came upon a small pipe. It had to be loosened, but there was only room for one hand. It didn’t took long before they found a solution: they asked a tiny Phillipine crew member to help. That worked! The pipe was loosened and a little later a new FWD seal was installed.
The superintendent was more than satisfied and AEGIR happy with a job well done.

Great bow thruster job for AMPS

The question was: can you overhaul our bow thruster?
Of course we can, we replied.
And so the bow thruster was delivered to us in Wijk bij Duurstede. In the workshop it was neatly taken apart and put back together.
Meanwhile AMPS had to put together a team. A stainless steel insert had to be welded in the thruster tunnel and the propeller blades would be thickened. Besides that the replacement of the bow thruster would be done afloat.

Everything came together beautifully last week. The ship was trimmed and in 2,5 days (within the vessel's schedule) everything was assembled, put back and tested.
A small problem came up which meant that the blades had to be modified  again. But all in all it was a great job, in which all our expertise and service force came together.
AMPS is strong in turnkey projects and we just love jobs like this!

AM PRIME Parts on Finnish vessels

aegir protection system

During a visit in Finland, a superintendent mentioned the problems he had time after time with fishing nets in the propeller. I was surprised to hear that no net prevention system had been installed. The customer already decided for PRIME SEAL products and so I offered him our APS (AEGIR Protection System). A simple, but highly effective product that prevents nets to enter the seals. It is compatible with all existing systems and can be relatively easily mounted.
The superintendent was immediately convinced and so at the next docking, his vessels will be equipped with APS PRIME SEAL.
Sometimes it's really a piece of cake to make someone happy!

Small inside joke

Looking at our PRIME SEAL liner 1180 in the warehouse,
we wondered how many AEGIR-employees would fit in?
There was only one way to find out...

10 was what AEGIR could squeeze in,
but we think 11 might have worked too.

Doing business in Åland

Marcel v/d Hoff- Area Sales Manager

Last week I (area sales manager AEGIR) was in Åland, an island between Sweden & Finland. There's a lot of shipping going on there.
I just got there when panic broke. A vessel ran aground and bottom damage was suspected. They decided to dock a.s.a.p. Since class renewal was only a couple of months away and sterntube seals needed to be replaced they decided to take the class renewal forward in combination with the bottom inspection in dry dock.
Within a single hour AEGIR supplied them an quotation with all relevant parts. Since AEGIR keeps record of every vessel, the owner didn't have to go through his books. We confirmed the order the next day and the seals were delivered from stock on time for docking. That's how AEGIR likes to do business.

Marintec 2011: remarkable

It has been 18 months since I visited Shanghai. Being back to support our Asian colleagues at the Marintec '11, I'm struck by the speed of China's development. It is impressive. And the same goes for the fair. Marintec China is big in terms similar to SMM. The entire maritime industry is represented here.

Today's mission

That's what I search for during this visit. It soons become clear, in these economically challenging times price is even more important than it was. As a European manufacturer AEGIR had already incorporated that message. But more important: being cheaper is not enough. To survive within this international battle, you need
- a competitive price
- guaranteed top quality
- and the highest service level possible.

If you offer these things Made in Europe & Serviced in Asia can be propagated as a quality statement.

Service, can one go too far?

One of our customers orders a SC2 seal for emergency repairs to one of its cruise vessel. The order comes in and is processed. The PRIMESEAL seals are sent and the invoice is made. As part of training a salesperson checks everything again and takes a look at the latest service report. It turns out that there is no need for a SC2, but a SC1. Our sales office suspects that an error has occured and as a precaution they order the correct seals.

Hand carried to Cyprus

Our area sales manager decides to fly to Cyprus. Just in case, and an extra visit can not hurt. Before the repair has begun the new seals in place and are indeed the right ones.

So no, service can not go too far. Not as far as AEGIR is concerned.

Aegir in Turkey

AEGIR in Turkey

Since January 2011 AEGIR has been active in Turkey. Up until then, AEGIR engineers visited Turkey regularly on service jobs, but never for Turkish shipowners or shipyards.

Our sales manager has just returned from his 4th trip. This time he also visited Izmir in the southwest. So far he is excited about Turkey.
"It's an interesting country with great potential," he says. "And our agent in Istanbul is a success too. In addition, many Turkish ship owners / managers now use Primeseal spares and the service is growing well. This absolutely works."

Largest bulk carrier, chooses AEGIR

Yesterday, AEGIR-Marine Asia received the order for spares and service for the world largest bulk carrier.
This vessel is not just any vessel. It's huge!
Dimensions: length 343 meters, beam 63,5 meter, draft 23 meters, dwt 364.767 dwt!

After our succesful project with the world largest container vessels, this is another proof that AEGIR is recognized by major ship owners as a reliable quality supplier, able to service any size and type of vessel in the world.
It makes us proud that AEGIR is more and more a preferred supplier and partner for ship owners and managers around the globe.

Service & Quality

On the way (this time in the States) I always check how others do things. Especially their approach of service and quality have my interest. This time I ran into this slogan that I immediately recognized it as one that suits AEGIR-Marine and our vision on service:

Very true, I would say. A little later I found this one:

Definitely true too. Whether a product or a service, the only thing that really counts is the customer's experience. And so the customer -and his needs- should always be centered.                                                                                                  Ruud Muis

Bulgaria & Romania

For the first time in AEGIR's history an area sales manager goes to Bulgaria & Romania.
The preparations are thorough and in 4 days ship owners / managers and large shipyards (Constanta and Mangalia) will be visited in both countries.

I (Gerben Donselaar) am looking forward to tell the AEGIR story, because it  is truly unique. Just read about this incident two weeks ago:

Cyprus - Wijk bij Duurstede (the Netherlands)
08.30 Customer from Cyprus sends an email request.
10.00 Quotation at the customer's desk

AEGIR-Marine in Cyprus: great challenge

As of 15 september Gerben Donselaar (area sales manager AEGIR-Marine) takes over responsibilty for Cyprus. Together with Hans Dekker and our local  agent he visited the island.
His first impression:

Very nice temperature (35 gr.) which results in no appointments between 12 o'clock and 3, but time for lunch and beautiful views.

Our program was full, many appointments, quotations and even direct assignments.

In short: a great week. Cyprus seems a great opportunity for a sales manager. Certainly one of AEGIR-Marine.

AEGIR at the NEVA

A very rewarding visit

It's always special to be in St. Petersburg, in Russia. If it's about the maritime industry, there's a lot going on in Russia. And that's exactly what NEVA 2011 shows us. The fair is busy and going here definitely was the right thing to do for AEGIR.

Of course we attended the reception at the Dutch consulate. It resulted in some very interesting contacts. We'll certainly get back to that later.

Last but not least, it's good to see that AEGIR's Russian agent knows how to use his eyes and ears!

Success on a large project

We are very proud that we have just finished a large project for one of the biggest container ship owners. All 8 vessels have been supplied with our largest sealing rings (1180 mm). We could deliver those from stock. All vessels were serviced on a consecutive row in China and are sailing again in good order.

Our principal was very pleased with our company and would like to thank our Asian

A new day, a new flag

AMPS flag

Aegir's vlag has already been waving next to the Dutch flag for some time now. Today AMPS'(AEGIR-Marine Propulsion Service) flag joined them. It had to get used to it, but once the wind took hold of it, it waved sisterly alongside.
